The main cities of Lombardy
The list of major cities and towns of Lombardy is headed by the regional capital of Milan. Its population of 1.4 million makes it by far the most populous city in the region but statistics aside, it's very much the cultural capital and main travel hub of Lombardy as well.
The Lombardy region has the most provinces of the twenty regions of Italy with 12, and each one of those 12 provinces has a provincial capital. These 12 provincial capitals are some of the most historic and attractive cities in Italy, including the likes of Mantua, Pavia, Bergamo, Brescia and Cremona. Two more of the provincial capitals lie on the banks of Lake Como with Lecco and Como itself.
The list of provincial capitals in Lombardy is completed by the smaller cities of Monza, Lodi, Sondrio and Varese. A further four cities with large populations but without being provincial capitals are Vigevano with its famous Piazza Ducale, the beautifully-named Crema and the two cities that neighbour each other north-west of Milan: Busto Arsizio and Legnano.
